The Basics

What is the EU AI Act?

The EU AI Act is the world's first comprehensive AI legislation. The goal? Ensuring AI is used in a safe, transparent, and ethical manner within Europe.

Important: the law applies not only to companies that develop AI, but also to organisations that use AI. And that means: virtually everyone.

Providers

Organisations that develop or market AI systems.

Deployers

Organisations that use AI systems. Think ChatGPT, Copilot, AI analysis tools, etc.

Article 4

The Obligation to AI Literacy

Article 4 of the AI Act requires organisations to ensure a "sufficient level of AI literacy" among their staff.

"AI literacy means the skills, knowledge and understanding that allow providers and deployers to make an informed deployment of AI systems and to gain awareness of the opportunities and risks of AI."

This is not non-binding advice. It is a hard requirement. Without demonstrable policies and trained staff, you are in violation.

What does AI literacy mean in practice?

HR employee

Understands which information may or may not be entered into ChatGPT when writing job postings

Financial analyst

Recognises how bias in data can lead to inaccurate AI analyses

Customer service

Knows how AI chatbots can be deployed responsibly

Manager

Can assess risks of AI usage and apply policies
